The Pixelstick LED Light Painting Tool is a niche accessory that’s designed for creative light painting. Key features include:
About Light Painting. If you’re not familiar with light painting, you can get a brief background here and do a Google image search to see examples.
What’s the Pixelstick? The Pixelstick is a 73-inch “wand” that uses 200 RGB LEDs to produce images and patterns for nighttime light painting. The lightweight aluminum build breaks down to 43 inches for easy transport, with relatively simple on-site assembly.
How Does It Work? The included controller reads BMP image files from an SD card (4 GB included) to then display them, one vertical line at a time, using the LEDs. If that’s hard to imagine, the creators made a quick gif that helps to illustrate how it works.
What Can It Do? The short answer is “A lot.” Since images and designs can be user-created, the sky’s the limit. While your standard long exposures will be the most common use, it can also transition into multiple exposures and time lapse.
What You Need. This is just the lighting tool. You’ll still need a camera, lens, tripod, remote shutter release, and some creativity and skill. Some demo images/patterns come installed on the unit, but anything beyond that will require loading them to the included SD card via computer.
