The Widest Fisheye Lens Ever Manufactured. What started as a 2015 April Fools Day tease has now come to life! The C-4 Precision Optics 4.9mm f/3.5 lens is a specialty lens among specialty lenses. The Hyper Fisheye angle of view on the fully-manual lens provides 270-degrees of coverage that is captured as a circular fisheye image on full-frame E-mount cameras. Check out this photo as a visual example of the lens on a full frame mirrorless body.
It’s Large & Heavy. This lens will not work well in situations that don’t allow for heavy-duty tripod mounting on account of the large amount of glass required to make this wide-angle feat possible. The lens weighs an impressive 28.6-pounds. A lens base with extendable legs is included for horizontal applications and to use as handles. This is a mount the camera on the lens kinda situation.
E-Mount Compatibility. This lens will accommodate Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras inside the lens base but also allows for LWS rail mounting on larger E-mount cinema cameras. The iris and focus rings are geared and ready for accessories.
Optics. Five extra-low dispersion elements keep chromatic aberrations in check, and the entire lens is designed, assembled, and calibrated by the masterful hands at C-4 Precision Optics.
Why? This lens was built with full dome imaging, VR, and 360-video applications in mind, but more importantly, to prove it could be done.
C-4 Precision Optics (co-owned by lens designer Brian Caldwell and Roger Cicala) prototyped a single lens; the 4.9mm Hyper Fisheye for Sony E mount. As a prototype, there are only 3 copies in existence. This is copy 2 of 3. No other copies will be sold.

“The closest thing that’s existed to this is the 1970s classic Nikkor 6mm f/2.8 fisheye, which gave a 220-degree field of view, weighed 5 kg, and can be rarely found for $100,000 and up these days....
“The closest thing that’s existed to this is the 1970s classic Nikkor 6mm f/2.8 fisheye, which gave a 220-degree field of view, weighed 5 kg, and can be rarely found for $100,000 and up these days. The C-4 optics lens weighs every bit as much as the Nikkor, but should be far sharper, have less distortion and vignetting, and cost somewhat less than those do today. (‘Somewhat’ being defined as ‘less than half’.)”
