The Canon XA40 is a compact, 4K-capable, prosumer camcorder, the predecessor to the XA50, and an update to the XA30. Key features include:
1/2.84-inch 21.14MP 4K UHD CMOS sensor
30.6-612mm f/1.8-2.8 20x optical zoom lens
Capture UHD 4K/30p at 150 Mbps & 1080/60p at 35 Mbps
1x mini HDMI output and 2x XLR inputs
Prosumer Goes 4K. For those of you familiar with previous XA models, you will definitely notice the XA40’s gratuitously upgraded sensor, giving a substantial jump in both resolution and maximum bitrate. This camcorder is capable of recording highly efficient UHD 4K/30p files up to 150 Mbps! Please note, due to the improved recording capabilities, the XA40 can only shoot MP4 (so long, AVCHD!).
Compact & Easy to Use. The Canon XA camcorders are a fantastic option for first time videography or situations requiring a compact, no fuss camcorder. Despite its small stature, the XA40 features mini HDMI out for external monitoring and a top handle with professional audio inputs.
Image Stabilized Zoom Lens. The attached lens has a 20x zoom ratio with a 35mm equivalent zoom range of 30.6 to 612mm in 4K. The focal range is extended to around 640mm when shooting in 1080p or lower. The lens works in conjunction with the sensor for 5 axis of stabilization to ensure smooth handheld shooting.
Other Notable Features. Dual SD card slots keep you shooting longer without stopping to swap cards and offer simultaneous dual recording. The camera has two options for viewing your image with a flip-out, 3-inch, capacitive-touch LCD and a compact, extendable rear viewfinder. The camcorder has 4 available channels of audio recorded as linear PCM with two of those those providing phantom power through XLR connectors on the top handle.
