The Canon 400mm f/4L DO IS II is a super telephoto lens for Canon DSLRs and an update to the Canon 400mm f/4L DO IS. It’s perfect for sports and wildlife photography. Key features include:
Improved image quality
4-stop, 3-mode, tripod-sensing image stabilization
Faster, more accurate autofocus
Reduced size and weight
Diffractive Optics. Gapless dual-layer diffractive optics allow the lens to be smaller and lighter compared to traditional Canon super telephoto lenses. This advanced optic system reduces chromatic and spherical aberrations, ensuring high quality images.
Super Telephoto Focal Length. The 400mm focal length is popular for sports and wildlife photographers, with this lens targeting the latter with its reduced size and weight.
Image Stabilization. The in-lens stabilizer provides up to 4 stops of correction to combat image shake. There are three IS modes to choose from (Standard, Panning, and During Exposure Only), and automatic tripod detection means you don’t have to turn it off when locked down on a tripod.
Ultrasonic AF Motor. The ultrasonic motor provides fast, silent autofocus performance. It has full-time manual focus override, a focus limit switch and stop buttons for preventing focus hunting, and a Power Focus Mode for pseudo-follow focus movements.
Build and Optics. Its weather-resistant build lets you keep shooting when the weather gets questionable, with a fluorine coating to keep the front and rear elements free of water and smudges. Besides the diffractive optics system, the 400mm f/4 DO IS II also features one large-diameter ground aspherical element and one Ultra Low Dispersion element to improve overall image quality. The integrated tripod foot allows easy attachment to a tripod or monopod, and the included drop-in UV filter takes care of ultraviolet light.

Back in the day, I was a fan of the original 400mm f/4 DO IS. It had it’s limitations, but it was so much lighter and easier to handhold than the available 300mm and 400mm alternatives that I still found it worthwhile. The new 400mm DO IS II lens is far, far better than the original. It’s significantly sharper. The IS is superior. It’s still the lightest and easiest to handhold of all the supertelephoto primes.
But the playing field has changed a bit, because the new Canon 300mm f/2.8 IS II is far lighter than it’s predecessor, not much heavier than the DO. So the question becomes is the DO really better than the 300mm f/2.8 IS II with a 1.4X teleconverter. The answer is yes, it is, especially away from center, but the difference isn’t huge. On the other hand, even though the weight is very similar the DO has a weight distribution advantage: it’s weight is close to the camera mount, where the 300mm f/2.8 has more weight up at the front of the lens. This makes the DO easier to handhold and shoot with, there’s less levering of the weight on your wrists.
Yes! We carry several camera straps that add comfort and functionality over default straps found on cameras, like the Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap or the Kirk SS-1 KES Security Strap.
