The Leica 28mm f/2 Summicron-M ASPH for Leica M (2023) is a versatile, moderately wide, fast-aperture prime designed for Leica M-mount cameras that features a redesigned housing and an updated optical design. Key features include:
Great for journalism, documentary, and street photography
Shallow depth of field and great low-light performance
High-contrast images with excellent color rendition
Improved focus; durable construction
Fast, Moderately Wide Prime. The Leica 28mm f/2 Summicron-M ASPH’s focal length provides a nice balance between wide angle and normal range. It rides the line of being wide angle while minimizing the “wide-angle distortion” that you’d see in a 24mm lens. It’s great for journalism, documentary, architectural, and close-up street photography. Its f/2 aperture enables extensive depth-of-field control and great low-light performance, while its ten-blade diaphragm gives you round, pleasing bokeh. A built-in extendable lens hood shields the front element to reduce flare and ghosting.
Updated Optical Design. As part of the Summicron family, the 28mm f/2 features top-of-the-line optics. Its six-group/nine-element optical design incorporates an aspherical element to minimize aberrations and distortion while producing high-contrast images with accurate color reproduction.
Improved Focusing. This lens gives you an improved 1.3-foot minimum focusing distance that lets you get in close when you’re using cameras that feature live view, or when you’re using the Leica Visoflex 2 Electronic Viewfinder or the Leica FOTOS app. The 28mm still only supports rangefinder focusing down to 2.3 feet, and you must use live-view focusing between 2.3 feet and 1.3 feet.
