The Leica SL3-S is a full-frame mirrorless camera with a hybrid autofocus system and impressive video capabilities. It’s not an update to the SL3, but rather a more video-focused camera in the same family. Key features include:
24MP full-frame sensor and Maestro IV processor
5-axis image stabilization up to 5 stops
- 6K, C6K, 4K, C4K & FHD 10-Bit recording
CFexpress Type B & SD UHS-II card slots
24MP Full-Frame Sensor. At the heart of the Leica SL3-S is a versatile 24MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor. Leica has removed any and all low-pass filtration to deliver sharp, incredibly detailed imagery.
Maestro IV Processor. The updated Maestro IV processor, first seen in the SL3, reliably processes image data and provides impressive image stabilization. It delivers a sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 200,000 and clocks in with record-breaking continuous shooting at up to 30 fps.
Advanced Autofocus. The sensor of the SL3-S boasts 779 autofocus points, which is two times more than the SL3 and three times more than the SL2-S. The autofocus points in conjunction with Contrast Detection AF delivers rapid, intelligent object detection and tracking for moving subjects.
Unlimited Recording Capabilities. Post-production possibilities are expanded greatly thanks to unlimited 6K Open Gate internal recording. This system’s video capabilities allows you to utilize the full size of the sensor in its native 3:2 ratio, crop and adjust framing without losing quality, experiment with aspect ratios, and even use an anamorphic lens without losing image information! As for external recording, the SL3-S is capable of recording HDMI-RAW in 5.9K at 30 fps to external display recorders.
Legendary Lensing. The Leica L-mount system offers users an incredible amount of flexibility when it comes to lensing. The native full-frame SL-series glass benefits from electronic communication for fast autofocus, electronic aperture control, and optical image stabilization. And then there are the adapters—this camera supports Leica M, S, R, and TL lenses. Please note that TL lenses will only cover the APS-C/Super 35mm sensor area.
Image Stabilization and EyeRes Viewfinder. The SL3-S’s five-axis image-stabilization system keeps things ultra-sharp even when you’re shooting hand-held. Multishot Mode is great when using a tripod or when you’re shooting stationary subjects, since it gives you a more color-accurate, highly detailed image than a single shot would. The impeccable EyeRes viewfinder uses its optical glass lens system to clearly display your subjects with up to 120 images per second and 5.76m-dot resolution.
Power and Memory. The SL3-S uses the BP-SCL6 battery, which is rated at 320 shots per charge, or roughly 1350 shots per charge if you only use the optical viewfinder. There are two memory-card slots—one CFexpress Type B, the other UHS-II SD/SDHC/SDXC—to give you flexible file-storage options. With this version of the SL3, you also have the option of recording directly to an SSD via USB-C.
Connection Machine. You can use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth in conjunction with the Leica FOTOS app to share images directly to linked iOS devices, to remotely adjust camera options and control the shutter, and use geotagging on your shots. You can also use the USB Type-C port and the separately available Leica FOTOS cable to connect this camera to an iPhone for file management and sharing via the FOTOS app.
