The Nikon 28mm f/1.8G AF-S is fast-aperture wide-angle lens for Nikon DSLR shooters. Key features include:
Great color rendition and background separation
Ideal for low-light shooting
Fast, silent autofocus
FX and DX compatible
Great Color Rendition. The Nikon 28mm f/1.8G AF-S is compatible with both FX and DX cameras, providing high image quality with great color rendition.
Excellent in Low Light. At 28mm, it serves as a great in-between option for when 24mm is too wide, but 35mm just doesn’t cut it. The f/1.8 aperture makes it ideal for low-light shooting and getting as much background separation possible.
Fast, Silent Autofocus. The combination of Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor and rear-focus design provides fast, silent autofocus that’s perfect for shooting stills and video.
Advanced Optical Design. The lens’s advanced optical design includes two aspherical elements for minimizing aberrations, and Nikon’s Super Integrated Coating and Nano Crystal Coat for eliminating ghosting, flare, and reflections.

One of the really great things Nikon shooters have these days is access to the Nikkor f/1.8 G prime lenses. In my opinion, they’re the best bang-for-the-buck of any group of lenses in photography. This is the exception to that, since this lens is much pricier than the other f/1.8s. That has to be because of the difficulties of making a lens at this focal length, because it’s definitely not better than the others.
It’s quite sharp in the center wide open, but has a fair amount of longitudinal chromatic aberration and complex coma distortion wide open. It really has to be stopped down to f/5.6 to eliminate those and give you good corners. However, stopping down to f/3.5 or f/4 brings up some very clear focus shift and a resultant tendency to backfocus at those apertures. If you need to shoot at those apertures, I’d recommend using Live view rather than autofocus – or use point autofocus on something in front of your intended subject.

“G” is a reference to a G-Type lens and is distinguishable from a standard D-Type lens by its lack of an aperture control ring. G-Type lenses relay distance information to compatible DSLRs like a D-Type lens but rely wholly on electronic aperture control through a camera body.
“AF-S” refers to Auto Focus that features Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor or “SWM.”
