This is probably the most logical and well thought out camera release of 2012. A lot of people don’t need 36 megapixels, but want a full frame camera with more resolution than the D700 / D3s provided. This fits the niche perfectly. Let’s be honest, 24 megapixels is more than almost anyone needs (and more than most cameras have).

The D600 actually has advantages (other than price) over the D800: it shoots a bit faster and is smaller and lighter. There are a few trade offs you should be aware of. Most important is the D600’s maximum shutter speed of 1/4,000. It’s not something that effects a lot of people a lot of the time, but it can be significant in certain situations. The autofocus and autometering systems seem a bit less robust on paper, but that’s on paper. Time will tell how much of a practical difference it makes.

For most Nikon shooters, though, the D600 is like Baby Bear’s Stuff was for Goldilocks — just right.
