16.3MP CMOS sensor and 100-12,800 normal ISO range
Excellent for sports photography and low-light shooting
Fast, quiet, and accurate eleven-point autofocus system
Four-stop image-stabilization system
The Pentax K-5 IIs is the update to the popular K-5.
It’s based around a 16.3MP CMOS sensor with integrated analog/digital conversion circuitry. Its lack of an anti-aliasing filter means that it delivers superior resolution and image sharpness. This increase in image quality does come at a cost, as the camera is more susceptible to moiré; however, you can easily monitor this if you’re shooting in a controlled studio environment.
The advanced 11-point SAFOX X autofocus system provides extremely accurate results with a wide EV range for improved low-light performance. This, combined with its normal ISO range of 100-12,800 and four-stop in-camera Shake Reduction, makes the K-5 IIs a strong choice for low-light shooting. Sports shooters will also appreciate its 7 fps continuous mode and 1/8,000 sec. maximum shutter speed.
The K-5 IIs offers Full HD video recording, up to 1080/25p in AVI format. It has a built-in stereo mix for quick, in-camera audio. For improved performance, there’s also a 3.5mm external-mic input. While the K-5 IIs isn’t really optimized for high-quality video, it’s plenty good for home movies or small-budget work.
The K-5 IIs offers a magnesium-alloy shell around a stainless steel chassis, with Pentax’s well known 77 weather protection seals. The 100% optical viewfinder with 0.92x magnification provides a bright composition aid, and the large 3.0" 921K rear LCD feature an air gap-free and scratch-resistant design. The camera has a standard pop-up flash (GN 13 @ ISO 100), a traditional hot shoe, and PC-sync input with a maximum flash sync speed of 1/180 sec. The K-5 IIs shoots native Adobe DNG 14-bit RAW files in addition to Pentax’s proprietary PEF files and standard JPEG. It records images and video to SDHC/XC memory cards, and the rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides about 980 shots per charge.
