The RED Scarlet-W Brain is the smaller, more affordable alternative to the RED WEAPON Magnesium and an update to the RED Scarlet-X Dragon Brain. Key features include:

High dynamic range, advanced color science, RAW recording

Compact build and intuitive layout
Heart of a Dragon. The RED Scarlet-W features a Super 35 RED Dragon sensor. This means you have the features, performance, and pedigree of an industry-standard chip with a high dynamic range, advanced color science, and RAW recording capabilities.
Interchangeable Optical Low-Pass Filters. Swap the optical low-pass filter to optimize your footage. We send the DSMC2 standard OLPF installed for balanced shooting, but we also rent the Skin-Tone Highlight and Low-Light Optimized OLPFs as add-ons.
DSMC2 Accessorized. The Scarlet-W’s new design adds the small details that make working with it easy and intuitive. Built-in stereo mics help capture scratch and environmental audio, while the built-in speaker allows for playback. RED has placed pogo connections across the brain to keep you from having to deal with a Medusa-like tangle of cables.
Additional Items Required. At a minimum, you’ll need the following additional items to operate this camera:
- RED DSMC Canon, Nikon, or PL lens mount (see Recommended on the left-hand side of this page for a complete list)
- RED Touch LCD or DSMC2 Touch LCD (see Recommended on the left-hand side of this page for a complete list)
- RED Mini-Mag Station
Q & A
Wooden Cable-less battery plates used with DSMC2 brains running firmware version 7.1 or newer require a firmware update to the plate before it can be recognized as a compatible module by the camera.
We’ve updated our copies in-house so if you rent a DSMC2 brain and cable-less plate from us, you’re all set! If you source a cable-less plate from somewhere else, you can go here for instructions on how to update the plate yourself.
At minimum, you’ll need these items to operate this camera: a RED DSMC Lens Mount; a RED Mini-Mag SSD; a RED Mini-Mag Station; and a menu-interface solution such as the RED DSMC2 Sidekick (external monitor required for live view), a RED Touch LCD, or a DSMC2 Touch LCD.
REDMAG SSDs aren’t compatible with this camera.
You’ll need a certificate of insurance, LensCap+, or a deposit to rent this item.
