The Sony E 10-20mm f/4 PZ G’s versatile, 15-30mm equivalent focal-length range is wide enough for handheld selfie-style vlogging and content creation but narrow enough to make a great everyday lens. The constant f/4 aperture isn’t quite fast enough for low-light shooting, but it’s better than a variable-aperture zoom and helps to keep this lens compact and lightweight.

G-Series Optical Design. The 10-20mm’s eight-group/eleven-element design includes three aspherical elements, two Extra-Low Dispersion elements, and one Extra-Low Dispersion aspherical element, which combine to produce clear, high-contrast images while minimizing chromatic aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range. The lens’s rounded seven-blade diaphragm gives images smooth out-of-focus areas when you desire a shallow depth of field.

Power Zoom. This lens boasts an integrated Power Zoom lever on its barrel and a dedicated zoom ring that lets you make simple focal-length adjustments. When paired with select Sony cameras, you can also use Power Zoom via on-camera controls. With select Alpha cameras, you can adjust the zoom ring’s rotation direction. You can also remotely control the zoom from a linked smartphone or by using the Sony GP-VPT2BT Wireless Shooting Grip, which is available as a separate rental item.

Focusing Performance. A Linear Motor autofocus system uses two separate motors for fast, precise, and nearly silent focus and tracking performance, making it ideal for video and stills alike. You can use the AF/MF switch on the barrel to quickly switch between focus modes, while the internal focusing design keeps the lens length consistent while upping responsiveness. If you’re using manual focus, the minimum focusing distance is 5.1 inches at the 10mm position and 6.7 inches with a 0.18x maximum magnification at the 20mm position. If you’re using autofocus, minimum focusing distance is 7.9 inches with a 0.14x maximum magnification. No matter what, you’ll be able to get pretty close to your subject.
