The Digital Bolex D16 was made to deliver high quality uncompressed footage in a more consumer friendly form factor.
Key features include:
- Classic Pistol Grip Design. Inspired by the consumer movie cameras of yesteryear (8mm, Super8, Double8, 16mm). The D16’s pistol grip allows you to record as long as you’re squeezing the trigger; continuous recording is also available at the push of a button.
- RAW Workflow. Created from the ground up with raw capture in mind, this camera cannot capture any compressed footage internally.
- C-Mount. The camera features the classic C-mount lens mount. While we don’t carry any dedicated C-mount lenses, we do offer the FotodioX Nikon Lens to C-mount Camera Adapter as a separate rental item.
Important Considerations:
- Lens Not Included. This camera does not include a lens.
- Instability. The D16 is unique and exciting in many ways; however, it is also somewhat unstable. We have had reports of distorted audio, frozen cameras, and corrupted SSDs. None of these conditions are permanent, the camera has simply proven temperamental, thus getting good results will require some trial and error. Use at your own risk!
- No Audio. This camera does not have an internal microphone. If you want to capture any audio, you will need some form of external mic.*
- Crop Factor. This camera has a crop factor of 2.70×. This means that for any lens, no matter what brand or mount, you will need to multiply the focal length by 2.7 (i.e: a 50mm lens on this camera will look like a 135mm lens would on a full frame camera) For more information consult this crop factor article.*
- Difficult Monitoring. The D16’s monitor is located on the top of the camera. It is best viewed from above and cannot be easily viewed from any other angle, so we strongly recommend an external viewfinder (like Zacuto’s Z-Finder EVF).*
- Apple Specific Format. The D16’s internal SSD is formatted in HFS+. Windows users will need extra software to read the HFS volume and transfer footage off of the camera. There are many options, this one is free.*
- Software Not Included. We cannot rent the D16’s exclusive Lightpost software, but a demo is available for download here. Lightpost is only available for Apple OSX, so we recommend Windows users try Davinci Resolve Lite. We prefer Resolve anyway, and it’s free, so it’s got that going for it.*
