The Sony FE 400-800mm f/6.3-8 G OSS is an E-mount, full frame, supertelephoto zoom. Key features include:
- 3-mode optical image stabilization
- Fast AF with dual linear motors
- 3 customizable Focus Hold buttons
- Ideal for wildlife and sports
Combines Massive Range with Usability. Sony went all the way with their longest-range full-frame E-mount lens to date. Seemingly defying physical laws, this massive lens is still fairly portable at just under 6 pounds and a little over a foot. What’s more is that it is compatible with 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, making this lens produce 560-1120mm f/9-11 and 800-1600mm f/13-16 ranges, respectively. When using teleconverters, this lens is best suited for bright conditions. Positioned as a kind of big sibling to the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3, the added reach benefits specialty subjects such as birding and aerial photography and videography.
Exceptional for Action. To keep up with the demands of wildlife and action shooting, the Sony FE 400-800mm is equipped with two precision linear motors that can handle the 120 fps max burst speeds of cameras like the a9 III. Burst shooting remains uninterrupted even when zooming – helped by the zoom ring’s short rotation throw. A three-mode Focus Range Limiter is ideal for optimizing performance based on subject distance and helps prevent the lens from hunting for focus. Focus breathing has been suppressed for a better video capture experience. There are three Focus Hold buttons in 90 degree increments around the barrel for access in any lens orientation. These buttons can also be assigned to another setting.
Physically Robust. The supertele hood has been redesigned for this lens to include a lock button for added security and a filter slot for making adjustments easily to variable ND or circular polarizing filters. The tripod foot is rotatable, with a collar that will turn a full 360 degrees. The internal zoom build ensures the center of gravity stays within a narrow range and mainly over the tripod foot for easier overall handling. Please note that the foot on this lens is not natively Arca-Swiss compatible and an additional plate is needed for pairing with tripod heads. While a tripod is highly recommended for a lens of this size, for help with handheld and low-light use this lens is equipped with optical stabilization, which gets a boost when combined with a camera with IBIS. As with many modern telephotos, there are three modes of stabilization: for static subjects, for panning shots, and for vertical/horizontal combo panning subjects.
The Sony FE 400-800mm f/6.3-8 G OSS lens offers reach, reliability, and really sharp results. It is recommended for photographers looking to replace the work (and weight) of several primes with just one zoom. This supertele is ready for demanding environments, including stadium events, safaris, birding, and aviation.
